i am excited to announce that a portion of my ongoing project on urban africa titled nairobi city was selected as a “work-in-process” honorable mention in the first annual daylight/CDS photo awards hosted by duke university’s center for documentary studies and daylight magazine.

the awards were guest juried by vince aletti – contributing writer/critic, the new yorker magazine; alec soth – photographer (magnum); darius himes – critic/publisher (radius books); jamie wellford – senior international photo editor, newsweek magazine; hank willis thomas – photographer; and julie saul – gallery owner/director; along with taj forer and michael itkoff, editors, daylight magazine; and alexa dilworth, publishing director, and courtney reid-eaton, exhibitions director, center for documentary studies at duke university.

the tour de france has ended! and in honor of the riders reaching the champs elysees after 2200 plus miles, another bike photograph from the archives.

it was a great tour this year – lance’s wrecks, the pave of roubaix, cav’s tears, renshaw’s head-butt, the wheel fight, schleck’s mountain wins, his defeat by chain drop, and contador in yellow. . . again!

excited to announce that after 15 months working in the middle east, and nearly five years before that working in africa, i am now based in new york city.

after making my way around israel and the west bank for the past year, i’ve completed the initial phase of my project no such thing which examines history, identity and land, and the costs of conflict and exile in the region.

i’ve only recently started to show this new work, but it has already received a warm response. it was the winning fine art series in the new york photo awards, was a director’s choice in the CENTER awards, and selected for publication in american photography 26, marking my second consecutive year of inclusion in AP’s annual book.

i am also excited to announce that i will begin an MFA in photography this summer at the university of hartford.

after navigating the wilds of the world, i’m eager to investigate new directions in photography, challenge my work and strengthen my understanding of the art and theory of the craft. i’m also looking forward to the opportunity to work with the great photographers at the hartford art school including the director robert lyons, professors alec soth and doug dubois and lecturer adam bartos.

the program is geared towards the engaged professional and is limited residency, so i am only in class a couple of weeks each semester. when class is not in session, i’ll be working on my thesis projects, which will periodically take me back to africa and the middle east.

during this time i’ll still be accepting commissions and assignments.

i’m honored and very excited to announce that my project, “no such thing”, photographed over the course of the past year in israel and the west bank, won the category for fine art series in this year’s new york photo awards.

i was photographing a quarry yard in the west bank when this young bedouin chap came up to see what the hell i was doing. a chatty kid, considering how little we could communicate. interestingly, he was smoking a joint. unfortunately, he was savvy enough not to let it show in the photograph. would’ve been a nice detail.

i’ve started carrying the hasselblad for portrait opportunities like this which often seem to pop up when i’m setting up 4×5 shots. i only wish i had started doing it earlier…

excited to announce that out of over 2200 photographs my series NO SUCH THING was one of ten selected for a director’s choice award in the CENTER awards. The series also made it to the final rounds of judging and top 4% of entries for CENTER’s project launch competition.

from the juror’s statement: “Our selection is unified by a subtle elegance, a delicate humanity, and a sense of mystery, as well as a remarkable clarity of perspective and a high level of craft.”

as a result, two photographs from the series will be part of a CENTER award exhibition at the newspace center for photography in portland, oregon this september.
